"The Falconers said they are happiest about the way the design makes the house fit into the boulder-strewn landscape. 'It's like our house is another rock,' said Phillip. Keeping that concept in mind helped keep the design compact and efficient, said Booher."

Designer tip. “Consider acoustics,” Smith says. “Oftentimes people don’t consider the amount of noise people make within homes, and acoustic absorption is left to the carpet and furniture. This does little to capture a cacophony of revelers who come to whoop it up on weekends or extended stays. So having a ceiling that absorbs this excitement makes for spaces that let marathon sessions happen, as opposed to mad sprints of social time.”

D5 Magazine Features Cabin in a Cabin
Cabin in a Cabin is a renovation project by studio Syndicate Smith that began with an existing one-room log cabin from 1915, set on the forested shore of Lake Wenatchee in Washington, USA. Instead of replacing the old cabin completely or attaching a simple extension, the studio removed former additions to uncover the original structure, building a new contemporary lake house around it.

Kristie and Joe Berg spent 15 years vacationing in a tiny one-bedroom cabin on remote Treasure Island on Puget Sound’s Case Inlet. On weekends and in the summer, the Seattle-based family went kayaking and boating, and their daughters, Avery and Alana, sold lemonade and painted shells.
As their daughters grew, the Bergs wanted a bigger home. But they dreaded demolishing the 800-square-foot cabin because it held such strong family memories.

Q&A With Laurel Podlich, RA Architect / Senior Designer
“I enjoy the concept stage during schematic design when we have the parameters from the client and the site. Parameters might sound restricting, and they are, but they help guide a design and make it successful because good design will meet (and surpass) all the needs of the client and site.”

A Century-Old Log Cabin Becomes the Living Room of a New Lake House
“The original cabin now functions as the living room, restored to its historic character and left largely untouched. A small number of roof logs were removed to allow pendant lights to float above the space. Those same logs were reused elsewhere, reinforcing the idea that nothing from the cabin was discarded without purpose.”
