Set within the wide-open landscape of the Methow Valley, Anti-Shed challenges the region’s familiar glass-heavy, shed-roof vernacular. Inspired by Scandinavian travels, the design embraces the clarity and restraint of the gable form, resulting in two matte-black volumes connected by a defined entry sequence. The dark exterior provides both function and contrast—absorbing winter heat and standing out against the valley’s snowy terrain.

The home’s layout centers on a protected courtyard that offers rare refuge from the valley’s strong north–south winds. This outdoor living room extends daily life beyond the walls, creating a comfortable, sheltered space in every season.

Inside, views are framed with intention rather than exposed through expanses of glass. Select openings capture mountain silhouettes, illuminate reading niches, and create focused moments of connection to the land while maintaining privacy and intimacy.

Two distinct wings organize the program: a social core oriented toward sweeping valley views, and a private wing with a primary suite and guest quarters. Together, they balance openness with seclusion, forming a retreat that feels both expansive and deeply personal.
